This afternoon the Federal Council of the FIP met urgently, convened after the tragic ambush which occurred against the Pistoia fans’ bus, in which one of the two drivers, Raffaele Marianella, 65, lost his life, struck by a stone thrown against the windshield. At the end of the meeting, the Federation decided that Sebastiani Rieti’s next home matches will be played behind closed doors pending the conclusion of the investigations. Thus the FIP in a note: “The Federal Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation file asking the Federal Court that, until the end of the investigations themselves, it urgently takes the precautionary measure to have the home matches of the RSR Sebastiani Rieti played behind closed doors. Furthermore, contrary to what was expected, the friendly match scheduled for next Wednesday 22 October in Rome between the national team and the RSR Sebastiani Rieti was cancelled. To remember and commemorate Mr. Raffaele Marianella, President Petrucci, with the consensus of the entire Federal Council, has ordered a minute of silence and mourning for all matches this week, in every championship.”

President Petrucci reiterated that those who attacked the bus “are certainly not fans, they are criminals. We must protect basketball and we must defend the good fans, the ones who bring their families to the games”. The president of CONI Luciano Buonfiglio, who participated in the council, asked “that a strong signal be given and that delinquent logic does not enter not only basketball, but sport as a whole. I am at your side for all the initiatives you will take together with the minister of sport and young people Andrea Abodi and the minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi”. The coach of the national team Luca Banchi also spoke on the matter: “The gesture of one is enough to pollute everyone’s work. But we cannot give others the possibility of appropriating our work. We could have canceled the gathering, but we decided to hold it anyway in respect of the mourning, but also of the work done by the Azzurri”.
