Attack on Bob Marley — Rolling Stone

Bob Marley was assassinated in his home country of Jamaica at the beginning of December. Presumably for political reasons, seven men attacked the reggae musician while he was in his house. He was slightly injured in the arm and chest by pistol shots. Marley’s wife Rita and his manager Don Taylor had it worse: both were shot and had to be taken to the hospital; Don Taylor, who had thrown himself over Marley to protect him with his body, was even in mortal danger at times. A few days after the attack, Bob was back on stage and gave a concert in Jamaica – albeit under police protection. Rita Marley, who is one of the singers in Marley’s band, the Wailers, was also there. The Prime Minister of Jamaica, Michael Manley, whose policies Bob had supported several times in the past, condemned the attack. The connection between Marley and. could provide the head of state with a motive for the attack. Elections in Jamaica were scheduled for December 15th; the situation in the country had deteriorated dramatically in the previous months; The clashes between political opponents were sometimes reminiscent of civil war-like conditions.

The song is a tribute to Haile Selassie. He was Ethiopian emperor and spiritual leader of the Rastafari movement, of which Marley was also a member. The lyrics come from one of Marley’s mentors, Mortimer Planno, who met Selassie during his visit to Jamaica in 1966. Now the piece is available to stream in digital form for the first time.
