Tennis professional Frances Tiafoe has won the ATP tournament in Halle, Westphalia.
The American Tiafoe beat his compatriot Taylor Fritz 6:4, 6:4 in the final on the lawn in Halle on Sunday. Tiafoe converted his first match point after just 67 minutes. He became the first individual winner from the USA in the 33-year history of the tournament.
Taylor Fritz served first in the final. He brought the first service game “to zero” in less than two minutes. Tiafoe then equalized with similar confidence to make it 1-1.
In his second service game, the 1.96 meter tall Fritz wobbled for the first time, Tiafoe forced him into longer rallies and fought for the first break point. But Fritz was able to fend him off and secured the service game.
While Tiafoe showed no weaknesses as a server, Fritz initially made a few mistakes in his third service game, which gave his opponent three break chances. But Fritz stayed strong, fended off all break points and won his serve game again.

When the score was 3:3, in the seventh service game of the match, Fritz was already leading 40:0, but let this lead be taken away. At debut, a net roller gave Tiafoe a break ball. In the following rally, which was characterized by slice shots, Fritz hit one of the undercut backhand shots out of bounds, so that Tiafoe recorded the first break of the duel.
There were no further breaks as the first round progressed, so Tiafoe won the first set 6-4 after 35 minutes.
Tiafoe gets another break in the second set
Fritz, ninth in the world rankings, who had fought for a three-set victory over Alexander Zverev in 2:39 hours in hot temperatures the day before, did not serve as strongly as usual in the final and did not seem as fresh as his opponent. In the first service game of the second set, Tiafoe, who defeated Daniel Altmaier in 73 minutes in the semifinals on Saturday, managed the first break.
Afterwards, both Americans played their own service games. Fritz fought against the deficit, but Tiafoe remained confident. He ended the match with a fast-paced forehand that Fritz couldn’t bring back.
Tiafoe had lost all of the last seven duels between the two players and now managed his first win against Fritz in more than ten years in Halle.
Fritz with second Final defeat in a row
Fritz had already been in the final of the lawn tournament at Stuttgart’s Weissenhof the previous week. There he lost to his compatriot Ben Shelton.
With the triumph in Halle, Tiafoe won a tournament in the prestigious 500 category on the ATP tour for the first time in his career and was in strong form on grass before the start of Wimbledon. The Grand Slam tournament in London will take place from June 29th to July 12th this year.
