The US relay at the World Athletics World Cup in Tokyo qualified for the final over 4×400 meters. She prevailed against Kenya in an excretion race. South Africa, on the other hand, did not take advantage of its additional chance of 4×100 meters.
The US quartet prevailed on Sunday in the line-up of Christopher Bailey, Demarius Smith, Bryce Deadmon and Jenoah McKiver in 2: 58.48 minutes against the Kenyan relay (3: 00.39). As hoped, the defending champion is there in the final on the World Cup final day at 1:20 p.m. (live at sportschau.de) – as a ninth quartet on train one.
US relay is the favorite for the title
In the regular lead on Saturday, the United States surprisingly finished sixth in sixth place in 3: 01.06 minutes. However, there had been a disability from the Sambia season in the third change. After a jury decision, the Americans and the Kenyans, who were also affected by the disability, received the chance for the excretion race on Sunday.
After the final entry via the 1600 meter long detour, the US relay is now the favorite for the title in Tokyo. US teams have only been beaten once in this discipline at World Championships since 2005. A German men’s relay had not qualified for the World Cup on this route.
South Africa not fast enough without competition
Another excretion race was strange on Sunday morning on the circular track in the nation stadium in Tokyo: The four South Africans Shaun Maswanganyi, Sinesipho Dambile, Bradley Nkoana and Akani Zimbine competed alone. In the preliminary run over 4×100 meters, an Italian sprinter had got in the way of the South Africans, who could therefore not end their races regularly.
South Africa missed the subsequent qualification for the season final.
In retrospect, Italy was therefore disqualified and South Africa got the second chance. Alone: They could not use the four runners. In order to move into the final as a ninth season, they should have run 38.34 seconds or faster – but the clock only stopped at 38.64 seconds.
The final over 4×100 meters will set the end of the World Athletics Championships at 2:20 p.m. (live at sportschau.de). In addition to the Americans favored by Jamaica, the German quartet is also included, which was surprisingly qualified for the medal decision with a strong preliminary.
