Athletics World Championships in Budapest: Sprint King of Budapest! Lyles also takes gold in the 200m

Status: 08/25/2023 10:05 p.m

In the footsteps of Usain Bolt: The American Noah Lyles won the gold in the 100 m and the world title in the 200 m at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest. Teammate Erriyon Knighton took silver, while Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo took bronze.

In 19.52 seconds, Noah Lyles confidently ran to his second title. Erriyon Knighton (19.75) and Tebogo (19.81), who had already won silver in the 100m, followed at a reasonable distance. Lyles had announced that he wanted to attack Usain Bolt’s world record (19.19). There was still a good bit missing. But no one could dispute his third consecutive World Championship title over his parade route.

The double from 100 and 200 m was last brought by Usain Bolt in Beijing in 2015. With the Jamaican 4×100 m relay, the world record holder even made the gold triple perfect. Lyles could follow in these footsteps in Budapest if it works out with his relay teammates on Saturday (9:40 p.m., live on Erste and on sportschau.de).

Accident shock before the semifinals for Lyles and Co.

Lyles’ way to the second title was mainly shaped by the accident the day before. On the way to his semi-final run, the vehicle with the American and his fellow sprinters collided with another transport vehicle in front of the stadium. Lyles got away with the shock, then ran easily into the final.

However, Jamaican Andrew Hudson got glass fragments in his eye in the crash, had to be treated medically and was only able to tackle the semi-final race, which was postponed in the schedule, with “blurred” vision. Hudson was initially eliminated in fifth place, but the jury subsequently awarded the Jamaican a place in the final.

In the fight for the medals, however, Hudson was unable to intervene. He finished eighth in the final (20.40).
