Athletics World Championships 2023 in Budapest: the World Cup highlights today

Status: 08/26/2023 06:49 a.m

Today (08/26/2023) the marathon runners will take to the track in Budapest, and the decision will also be made in the decathlon. In the evening, six more gold medals will be awarded – including over 4×100 m. The eighth day of the World Championships in Athletics at a glance. We broadcast in the first and in the live stream, we also keep you up to date in the live ticker at sportschau.de.

Marathon women (7.00 a.m.)

The 78 registered marathon runners have to be prepared for high temperatures despite the early start time in their World Championship race. The Olympic sixth Melat Yisak Kejeta from the Kassel running team will be at the start for the DLV in Budapest. After a baby break, the 30-year-old broke the World Cup norm this year as third in the Ottawa Marathon. The personal best of the native Ethiopian comes from her first marathon in 2019 in Berlin: 2:23:57 hours.

Decathlon (10:05 a.m.)

Will Leo Neugebauer pull off the big coup? The German German record holder had a terrific first day and is leading. The 23-year-old is aiming for gold, while European champion Niklas Kaul had to retire injured. The decathletes start their second day with the 110 m hurdles before continuing in two groups with discus throw (11.00/12.05), pole vault (13.00/14.00) and javelin throw (19.05/20.10). The decision will be made in the final 1,500 m run (9:25 p.m.).

Shot Put Women (10:25 a.m./8:15 p.m.)

The strength and nerves of the shot putter are severely strained on the penultimate day of the World Cup: there are ten hours between qualifying for the World Cup final and the fight for the medals. With Yemisi Ogunleye (11th in the world annual best list), Sara Gambetta (15th) and Julia Ritter (31st), the DLV sends a trio into the competition. For all three, just reaching the final would be a success. The defending champion is Chase Ealey from the USA, and her team colleague Maggie Ewen (20.45 m) was the best of the year.

Pole Vault Men (7:25 p.m.)

Gold for defending champion, world record holder and Olympic champion Armand “Mondo” Duplantis – anything else would be a huge surprise in the pole vault final. The 23-year-old Swede (6.12 m) and Ernest John Obiena from the Philippines (6.00 m) are the only ones in the final field who have crossed the six-meter mark this year. The DLV jumpers Oleg Zernikel, fifth place in the World Championships in Eugene, and Gillian Ladwig got stuck in the qualification. The European Championship second Bo Kanda Lita Baehre is injured.

At the World Championships in Eugene, “Mondo” Duplantis jumped to the title with a world record.

4×400 m relay (7.30/7.55 p.m.)

The “long seasons” of the DLV missed the World Cup finals in Eugene last year – and want to do better this time. Jean Paul Bredau, Fabian Dammermann, Marc Koch, Manuel Sanders and Marvin Schlegel are nominated for men, Elisa Lechleitner, Mona Mayer, Skadi Schier, Alicia Schmidt and Luna Thiel for women. The US quartet will start on both routes as defending champions. The finals on Sunday (27.08.2023, 21.37/21.50, live ticker at sportschau.de) will mark the end of the World Cup in Budapest.

800 m men (20:30)

Before the men’s 800m final, there was no clear favorite. In the semifinals, Kenyan Emmanuel Wanyonyi ran the fastest time. A year ago he was fourth in the World Championships, this year he could make it onto the podium. The world’s fastest Wyclife Kinyamal from Kenya is not at the start in Budapest. This also applies to German runners.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi stayed in the semifinals as one of only three runners under 1:44 min.

5,000m women (20:50)

After gold in the 1,500m, Kenyan Faith Kipyegon wants to win the world title in the 5,000m as well. Sifan Hassan from the Netherlands could thwart the plan of the world’s fastest of the year. European Champion Konstanze Klosterhalfen stayed at home injured.

Faith Kipyegon wants to finish ahead of Sifan Hassan again.

4×100 m relay (9.40/9.53 p.m.)

The highlight of the evening are the finals over 4×100 m for men and women – for men without German participation. Joshua Hartmann and Co. dropped the baton in the lead. The DLV women around Gina Lückenkemper were initially out with weak changes, but after a successful protest the German quartet is allowed to compete in the final. A year ago in Eugene, the German sprinters won bronze behind the USA and Jamaica.

With the US quartet, Noah Lyles could claim his third gold after his 200m title on Friday. Sha’Carri Richardson is reaching for her second title with the US Girls, as is Jamaican 200m World Champion Shericka Jackson.
