The world class of athletics as a guest in Dresden: At the meeting “Goldenes Oval”, three Olympic champions were at the start – including shot puts Yemisi Ogunleye and long jumper Malaika Mihambo, both of whom came in second place.

Olympic champion Yemisi Ogunleye has successfully started the open -air season. At the “Golden Oval” in the Heinz-Steyer Stadium in Dresden, the 26-year-old took second place on Sunday (June 1) with 19.67 meters.

Only the two -time world champion Chase Jackson (USA) was stronger – she took the sixth and last attempt at 19.73 meters. Third place went to Jackson’s compatriot Maggie Ewen, who pushed 19.50 meters. Jackson had already with the Halleschen Wilder Days secured the victory.

Mash becomes sixth

Ogunleye did not come up with her open-air best performance of 20.00 meters, which was served in Paris for the Olympic Gold Medal in the summer of 2024, but her second best outdoor width. The other German starters Katharina Maisch (Erzgebirge/18.82 meters) and Alina Kenzel (Stuttgart/18.30) took place six and eight.

For Ogunleye, the competition was the start of the outdoor season. The highlight follows in autumn: At the World Cup in Tokyo (13th to 21st September), she wants to fight again for a medal.

“I’m super grateful for this long place. Second place, it can go on,” said Ogunleye, who was sick in preparation. “It couldn’t be better as an introduction.”

Long jump: Mihambo with five invalid attempts

In contrast, long-jump European Malaika Mihambo made a bumpy start into the open-air season. Five of the six jumps of the Tokyo Olympic champion were invalid. With 6.66 meters in the third attempt, the LG Kurpfalz athlete secured second place in front of 8050 spectators. The Portuguese Agate de Sousa, EM-third in Rome 2024, won the victory with 6.73 meters. Third place went to the Dutchman Pauline Hondema (6.39).

Malaika Mihambo struggled for a long time at the “Golden Oval” in Dresden.

Mihambo was not yet in top condition in her first competition of the season. After two invalid attempts, the 31-year-old narrowly made it into the final fight. Again and again Mihambo came to his back and was briefly treated between experiment two and three. The attempts four, five and six also remained without evaluation.

Mihambo hopes for improvement

“It then took me a bit until I felt as normal again. In between, I also had technical problems, but I hope that things will go better next week,” said the athlete from LG Kurpfalz after her first season competition.

At the World Cup in Tokyo, Mihambo is playing a medal two years ago after her injury -related cancellation in the title fights. In 2019 and 2022 she won gold.

Poetry jump: Lita Baehre also fetches silver

Stabhochspringer Bo Kanda Lita Baehre (Düsseldorf Athletics) made a good start to the season. The European Championships of 2022 crossed 5.73 meters and only had to surrender to the Australian Chris Nilsen, who mastered all five heights in the first attempt and ultimately won 5.92 meters.

In the discus throwing of women, the two -time Olympic champion Valarie Allman from the USA prevailed confidently with 67.84 meters. Shanice Craft (Halle) took fourth place with 64.07 meters.
