Armand Duplantis delivered a big show in the pole vault at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. So that his latest world record does not remain his last, the Swedish giant is already working on exciting changes.
With crossed 6.30 meters, Armand Duplantis not only grabbed the gold medal at the 2025 World Athletics Championships, but also set up a new world record in the pole vault.
The 25-year-old had already screwed his own world record three times this season, 6.27, 6.28 and most recently 6.29 meters, the exceptionally mastered. But Duplantis wants more and could therefore make some adjustments in the future to get even better.
“We experimented a little with 22 steps in the spring and will continue in the next spring when the basic training is complete in autumn and winter. If we feel that it is time to switch to 22 steps, we will do that,” reveals his father and coach Greg Duplantis at “Sportbladet”.

18 to 20 steps are currently common in the pole vault. “But when I jumped myself, I took 22 steps in a season and also experimented with 24 steps during training,” said Duplantis Senior.
Athletics: 6.40 meters possible for duplanis?
In addition, “Mondo” Duplantis could jump with a longer staff in the future. The athletics superstar currently relies on a 5.20 meter long model. The old and new world champion also has rods that measure 5.25 meters.
“If we should increase to 22 steps, what we think we will do, he can also switch to a 5.25 rod. I think he has to do that,” said father Greg. The trainer estimated that his son could ideally jump 6.40 meters high due to the changes said.
“We talk a lot about what the next big thing or the next phase will be,” he also revealed. World record holder Duplantis does not seem to be full yet.
