Athletic Bilbao pull option: PSG loan Ander Herrera stays

Previously under contract with PSG

Midfielder Ander Herrera is not returning to Paris Saint-Germain after starting his loan spell at Athletic Bilbao in August. The Basques announced on Wednesday that they have exercised the purchase option agreed with the French and are tying the 33-year-old to another year.

Officially, this must have happened on Deadline Day, otherwise PSG keeper Keilor Navas (36) would not have been allowed to switch to Nottingham Forest due to international loan regulations. As of this season, no more than eight professionals may be hired or loaned out in the same period if they are not homegrown players who have been at the club for three years between the ages of 15 and 21, or are generally U21 players.

€70m loan with option to buy

Before Navas’ departure, PSG already had Mauro Icardi (29; Galatasaray), Abdou Diallo (26; Leipzig), Leandro Paredes (28; Juventus), Georginio Wijnaldum (32; Roma), Julian Draxler (29; Benfica), Layvin in addition to Herrera Kurzawa (30; Fulham) and Colin Dagba (24; Strasbourg) on loan to other clubs.

Herrera returned to Bilbao last summer after eight years at Manchester United, who paid €36m to Athletic in 2014, and PSG. Since then, the two-time Spanish international has been on the field in eleven competitive games. Under Ernesto Valverde, Herrera is no longer one of the seeded players but often comes as a wild card to help with his experience. With muscle injuries, he had to pause three times this season.
