Athlete of the Year: Herrmann-Wick, Dauser and basketball world champions are “Athlete of the Year”

The German national basketball team was named “Team of the Year” on Sunday evening. Denise Herrmann-Wick was also honored as “Sportswoman” and Lukas Dauser as “Sportsman of the Year”.

Gymnast Lukas Dauser and biathlete Denise Herrmann-Wick are Germany’s Athlete of the Year 2023. The World Cup parallel bars champion and the sprint world champion were honored after their successes this year at a celebratory gala in the Kurhaus in Baden-Baden. The Team of the Year honor went to the German basketball players on Sunday, who were crowned world champions for the first time in September.

The German basketball world champions received the coveted trophy as “Team of the Year” on Sunday evening in the Kurhaus Baden-Baden to great applause. The surprise world champions led by NBA professional Dennis Schröder, who was connected via video, clearly came out on top in the voting with 2,539 points, ahead of the national ice hockey team (1,718) and the men’s field hockey team (1,119).

Denise Herrmann-Wick was able to celebrate when she was voted “Sportswoman of the Year”. In her last season as an active athlete, the biathlete boasted one gold and two silver medals at the Biathlon Home World Championships in Oberhof and also won the overall World Cup in the sprint. Herrmann-Wick prevailed in the 77th election of around 3,000 members of the Association of German Sports Journalists in the closest vote in the history of the women’s category. With 1,276 points, she was 21 points ahead of gymnast Daria Varfolomeev from Schmiden (1,255). Ski jumper Katharina Schmid came third (1,208).

Lukas Dauser is athlete of the year

The title of “Athlete of the Year” went to Lukas Dauser on Sunday evening, making it the first time since 2016 (Fabian Hambüchen) to a gymnast. At the World Championships in Antwerp, the KTV Straubenhardt athlete won the gold medal on parallel bars. He won with 1,753 points ahead of swimmer Florian Wellbrock (1,062) and rower Oliver Zeidler (865).
