In a statement, Desmet explains his decision to quit. “In the summer of 2023, I injured my ankle during the preparation for the European Championship with the Red Dragons. The ambition to be there and to perform was great and so I continued to play. However, after my second year in Italy, a solution had to be found and I have since undergone two operations.
Unfortunately, I continue to experience serious hindrances that prevent me from performing at my best. I have come to the conclusion that I can no longer reach the level I expect of myself. Rather than muddle through, I want to be honest with myself and with the club and its supporters. It is not easy when you are 26 years old and could turn your hobby into a profession to make such a decision, but I know it is the right one.
I hope to be able to end this season on a high note and make a valuable contribution to the BeNe Conference and the road to a seventeenth national title.”
Desmet won two titles, four cups, two Supercups and a BeNe Cup with Roeselare.
