There was a major shooting in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Tuesday evening. The police reported twelve deaths and nine injuries on Wednesday. More than ten suspects are being sought.

The shooting took place in an informal settlement in Cleveland. Informal settlements are residential areas that are often built illegally on municipal land. Millions of poor South Africans live in places like this.

Police say the suspects arrived in a minivan and opened fire at multiple locations before fleeing in the same vehicle. The motive for the attack is still unknown.

South Africa has one of the highest murder rates in the world. An average of about sixty murders take place every day.
