A violent earthquake struck off the coast of Japan on Monday evening. The northeastern regions were shaken by a magnitude 7.2 quake. After the earthquake, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a tsunami warning. According to the JMA, a tsunami of up to 3 meters could hit the northeast of the country. Warnings were issued for Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate prefectures, and tsunamis of 20 to 70 centimeters were observed at several ports. In the early hours of Tuesday, the JMA downgraded the warnings to advisories, and later all advisories were withdrawn.
