It’s still windy, cool and wet in Berlin – so it’s best to wrap up warm outside! At “Fenrij” there are hand-knitted oversize scarves.

“I knit the scarves in the evenings while watching TV on the sofa,” says Jana Blank (34). It can take up to four weeks to finish a scarf! Because Blank and her boyfriend Christian Bernhardt (36) do not run “Fenrij” full-time. Working with wool is still just a part-time job.

“Christian simply didn’t have a scarf and I couldn’t find a nice one for him in the shop,” says Blank. So she decided to just learn to knit herself. Colorful one-offs are now regularly created in the living room in Prenzlauer Berg.

“But there shouldn’t be too many scarves, otherwise we wouldn’t have any more storage space in our 45 square meters,” says Bernhardt. “Fenrij” mainly uses vegan wool. These are threads made from plant or synthetic fibers.

Each scarf comes with a small birth certificate. On it are the name, a consecutive number and when the first stitch was knitted. Blank: “The scarves should be favorite pieces that are best worn every day.”

The two Berliners now even sell scarves for animals! The reason: “Paula, a friend’s dog, always had big tonsils and, according to the vet, should better wear a scarf,” says Bernhardt.

A scarf for adults is available online from 55 euros at www.fenrij.com
