The redesign of those three shopping streets, with new paving stones, plants and trees and beautiful street furniture, is just in reverse order. In August, after the construction trade, the Oude Molenstraat is the first to be redesigned. This is followed by Gedempte Singel and finally the Oudestraat. If everything goes well, everything is ready at the end of 2026.
With the approach of the six shopping streets with new paving, more benches, green water collection bins (wadis), large planters and more trees, Assen wants to green the city center. In addition, more meeting places must make it more fun.
Shopping streets at Zomerse StenBuien can also lose the rainwater much better. There will be special water collection bins under the paving stones, which serve as ‘first water storage’ at Hoosbuien. The new street scene will soon have to connect seamlessly to the previously refurbished Koopmansplein, which is seen as ‘living room of the city’.
The cost of the total redesign is much more expensive. That has to do with setbacks in the ground, price increases and extra repair work that is brought forward to clear as much work as possible in one go. There was 4.9 million euros on the table for redesigning the shopping streets. In December the city council settled another 4.2 million euros.
