Assendelft is preparing for a fair and cycling: “Inextricably linked”

The performances are planned and the wooden partitions are against the windows of the pub: Assendelft is preparing for a week of fair and the fiftieth Tour of the Assendelft. Veterans of the round Iwan, Dick and René are very proud of it. “It’s the last race of the year, that’s what the riders are working towards. And then it’s the fair and drinking beer!”

This year too, the start and finish will be on the Beemsterstraat. Over the years, the village tour has become increasingly professional.

The prizes are always handed out at Grand Café Klinker, after which the riders can relax for a while. “It’s the last race of the year, that’s what you work towards,” says Iwan Neijzing, Dick’s son. “Then you enjoy the fair and the pub for a week.”

The Assendelft Cycling Committee organizes the round in collaboration with the cycling club DTS. René Melk is part of the committee and is happy with the team. “It is a close group of friends, it has remained that way all these years. I think that is important that you can do it with a nice group of people. With the exception of the corona year, cycling has been going on for all those fifty years. People expect that there ‘just’ a cycling round is organised, haha.”

Highlight

René himself also participated in the round many times, for the first time in the nineties. “I didn’t live in Assendelft yet, it wasn’t like that for me yet. When I came to live here later in 1989, things started to live more, and I also became a bit more fanatical about cycling. This round became a highlight for me.”

At home in Assendelft, Iwan was all about cycling, so it was logical that he would also participate. For him, conviviality is one of the major factors of success. “And as a cyclist you just want to cycle well for your own audience.”

The matches start at 11:15 am on September 30. There are different classes, including by women. The fair runs until October 5.
