Assen wants to get rid of posts on cycle paths. Next year as much as possible must have been removed from these obstacles so that fewer accidents with two -wheelers.

In a letter to the council, the mayor and aldermen write that many bicycle posts are ‘more dangerous than contributing to road safety’. They point out that posts are in dangerous places or are poorly visible. Especially when cyclists kick the pedals in groups, things go wrong.

The posts are placed to stop cars. But because nowadays more and more wider bicycles are running into the paths, passages are too narrow in some cases. Assen now wants to map which posts are dangerous. Then they are taken away in places where possible.

In Marsdijk, the municipality has already removed a few things. This year it is the turn of the Baggelhuizen, Pittelo and Peelo neighborhoods. The entire municipality must be tackled in 2026. Where Assen thinks there is a great chance of shortcut, the posts are made safer by, for example, applying marking or moving the pole.
