The house blessing at AS Roma has been going wrong for a long time. Now there is a break with a club icon.
Claudio Ranieri has resigned from his position as advisor at AS Roma. As Italian media unanimously reported on Friday, the decision came after internal tensions between the 74-year-old and coach Piero Gasperini. The latest dispute was triggered by a conflict following Ranieri’s public statements on player selection and internal decision-making processes. The club and its American owner Dan Friedkin are behind Gasperini.
Ranieri took over Roma as interim coach in November 2024 and looked after him until the end of the season. In the summer of 2025 he switched to a consultant role. For him, the separation from the club in his hometown is an inglorious end to his third term in office. Ranieri was on the sidelines of the sixth-placed team in Serie A from 2009 to 2011 and 2019 and is considered a club icon in Rome.
With Ranieri’s departure, Rome coach Gasperini continues to gain influence. At the same time, key questions remain unanswered regarding the sporting management and the development of a new squad for the next season. The future of sports director Frederic Massara is also unclear. A possible return of Francesco Totti in a new role at the club is being discussed.
