The eight-time French football champions AS Monaco has found a successor to head coach Niko Kovac, who was dismissed on New Year’s Day. As the Monegasque announced on Monday, as expected, the Belgian Philippe Clement will take over the team around national player Kevin Volland. The 47-year-old coach is moving from the Belgian Champion Club Bruges to the Principality and signed a three-year contract.

Ex-Hoffenheim coach takes over in Bruges

In Bruges, the former Belgian international will be inherited by Alfred Schreuder. The 49-year-old, who coached TSG Hoffenheim in the 2019/20 season, was last assistant coach of Ronald Koeman at the troubled FC Barcelona.

Kovac was released on Saturday after just a year and a half. The former coach of Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt wintered with the Monegas in Ligue 1 only in sixth place. Monaco had finished last season in third place. However, AS failed in the play-offs for the Champions League.
