As in 2019: Collins in the semifinals of the Australian Open

Melbourne (AP) – The American tennis player Danielle Collins has reached the semifinals of the Australian Open as in 2019.

The world rankings-30. defeated France’s Alizé Cornet 7-5, 6-1 in Melbourne’s surprise quarter-finals. After Madison Keys, the 28-year-old is the second American in the semi-finals.

On Thursday she meets the winner of the duel between former French Open winner Iga Swiatek from Poland and outsider Kaia Kanepi from Estonia. Keys is battling Australian world number one Ashleigh Barty for a spot in the final.

Collins was up 5-2 against unseeded Frenchwoman Cornet but had to concede an equalizer before she secured the first set and then left no doubt about her success. Cornet was in the top eight for the first time in her 63rd Grand Slam participation.

Two years ago, Collins dispatched Angelique Kerber from Kiel in the round of 16 on her way to the semi-finals of the first Grand Slam tournament of the season. In the fight for the finals, she then lost to the Czech Petra Kvitova.
