Ajax Women kept a view on placement for the group stage of the Champions League for a long time. After the draw last week in London (2-2), it also had chances of victory in Amsterdam. Vivianne Miedema shot the English but ruined the Ajax party with the decisive goal: 0-1.

Just like last week in London, Ajax had plenty of opportunities in the first half. Victoria Pelova put Chasity Grand one-on-one with the keeper and was therefore the closest to a hit for the team from Amsterdam. Grant was just too late.

Arsenal was kept in check and the team of coach Suzanne Bakker played with confidence at De Toekomst. The visitors only had minimal chances, which meant that the team from Amsterdam kept an eye on a good result for a long time.

In the second half there seemed to be little going on, but individual quality made the difference. In the 51st minute, Miedema received the ball after a bad throw-in from Ajax. The Orange international dribbled to the goal and left Ajax keeper Lize Kop without a chance: 0-1. The goal against Ajax visibly hurt, because the team then played a lot less football.

In a final offensive Ajax was still close to equalizing via Tiny Hoekstra. It gave the team from Amsterdam hope for a result, but Arsenal held their ground. As a result, the English advance to the group stage of the Champions League.
