Premier League leaders Arsenal have appointed technical director Edú Gaspar as the club’s first sporting director. With the promotion, the member of the Invincibles squad “assumes overarching responsibility for all our academy activities in addition to his existing duties in men’s and women’s football,” the Gunners said.

“We are delighted that Edú continues to dedicate his future to the club he loves so much, having been such a positive and vital contributor to our progress during his time with us. Edu’s promotion formalizes his already growing influence on our academy operations and we look forward to Per Mertesacker and Edú working together to further strengthen the path between our first men’s team and the academy,” said managing director Vinai Venkatesham.

Gaspar himself said: “I am very excited about this new role, which I see as a further development and consolidation of our way of working. We are making good progress in all areas of our men’s and women’s academies and are all excited to see what can be achieved in the future. I look forward to building on the hard work of so many people to continue growing together and achieve greater success and I’m grateful for the trust the club has placed in me. We move forward together.”
