Arsenal clearly lose at Crystal Palace – Arteta apologizes

Champions League place 4 missed

Arsenal FC suffered an unexpectedly clear defeat at Crystal Palace and club icon Patrick Vieira on Monday evening. The Gunners lost in the Premier League after goals from ex-Mainzer Jean-Philippe Mateta (16th), Jordan Ayew (24th) and Wilfried Zaha (74th) 0: 3 and missed the leap to the Champions League – Fourth place, currently occupied by Tottenham Hotspur – tied on points with one more game played.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta commented on the performance offered after the deserved defeat. “It’s time to accept the criticism, raise your hand and apologize because this performance wasn’t good enough for this club (…)” said Arteta (quoted via “BBC”) after the game. “We weren’t focused from the start. When you come here you have to be competitive, you have to win tackles and second balls and be aggressive and we were none of those things.”

Arteta’s team had previously had three league wins in a row, and a home game against Brighton & Hove Albion awaits them next Saturday to make amends. Crystal Palace manager Vieira, who wore the Gunners shirt 397 times between 1996 and 2005, said: “It was a really good team effort. There have been games where we played well but didn’t take our chances, but in this game we played well from the start and managed to win the game and not concede a goal.” He is really proud of his players.
