Kai Havertz reached the final of the Champions League with Arsenal FC and can continue to hope for the second premier class triumph in his career. The German international celebrated a 1-0 (1-0) win with the leaders of the English Premier League in the semi-final second leg against Atlético Madrid, but did not play after recovering from a muscle injury.
After the 1-1 draw in the first leg, Arsenal will face German record champions FC Bayern Munich or defending champions Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest on May 30th, who will determine the second finalist on Wednesday (9 p.m./DAZN). The German champion has to make up for a 4:5 from the first duel.
Bukayo Saka scored the golden goal in the 45th minute for the top team from London, who can also secure the English championship title for the first time in 22 years this season.
Shortly before the World Cup, Havertz can win the most important trophy in European club football for the second time. In 2021, the 26-year-old striker scored Chelsea FC to a 1-0 win in the final against Manchester City.
It is also the second final appearance in the Champions League for his current club. In 2006, Arsenal, with the then German national goalkeeper Jens Lehmann, lost 2-1 against FC Barcelona. Atlético Madrid, on the other hand, has to wait for their first premier class coronation.
In partly pouring rain, the two rivals played a fast-paced game in which there were largely no highlights before the break. For a long time there was only a hint of dangerous action and only excitement when Arsenal attacker Leandro Trossard went down in the penalty area after a challenge with Antoine Griezmann. The whistle from referee Daniel Siebert from Berlin remained silent.
But then Arsenal struck. Madrid keeper Jan Oblak could only fend off a sharp shot from Trossard. Saka shifted fastest and finished from close range.
Shortly after the restart, coach’s son Giuliano Simeone missed the equalizer for Madrid. The offensive player was decisively disrupted by Arsenal defender Gabriel as he finished in front of the empty goal.
On the other side, Viktor Gyökeres left the score 2-0. The Swede narrowly missed the goal with a direct shot following preparatory work from ex-Leverkusen player Piero Hincapie. Arsenal had to tremble until the end, but were then able to celebrate reaching the final.
