Arminias Klos is “in the early fall” of his career – bosses “faced with a fait accompli”

Record goalscorer from Bielefeld

Arminia’s record goalscorer is still unclear where Fabian Klos will lead after eleven years in Bielefeld at the end of the season. “I’m completely open about that. I feel the need to do something different, to get to know a new city, a new club,” said the 34-year-old East Westphalia center forward at a press conference on Wednesday. “I may be in the autumn of my career – but in early autumn.”

There are private reasons why the center of his life will be Cologne in the future, but not necessarily next summer. His girlfriend is from Cologne, and a baby is expected in the next few months. As far as a new employer is concerned, anything is possible. “I don’t rule out anything and let myself be surprised by what’s in store for me,” said Klos, emphasizing that he wants to “concentrate on sport for another two or three years”. “Depending on how long the body can keep going and how long the head still wants.”

After that, another career in the football business could follow with a little time lag. “Then it could be that I’m a really good coach.” He also didn’t rule out a return to Arminia. “If a player has such a connection to a club as I do in Bielefeld, then the door for a possible return, in whatever form, will never quite close on both the player and the club side.”

Arminia record goalscorer Klos: I “presented bosses with a fait accompli”

Club legend Klos had declared a week ago that he would not extend his expiring contract and would leave East Westphalia in the summer. The striker came to Bielefeld from the reserves of VfL Wolfsburg in the summer of 2011 and has played 385 games so far, scoring 162 times.

According to his own statement, he made the decision to leave primarily “with himself”, and he also exchanged views with his closest confidants. “I talked less to officials from the club, I informed them and presented them with a fait accompli. I don’t think that’s a negative thing. I made the decision for myself as a player and as a person. The reaction from the coach and sporting director Samir Arabi was positive. You made me feel like I could take it on with a crying eye. That strengthened me in a certain way that the moment is the right one,” says Klos (quoted via “table football“), who drew a positive conclusion about his time in Bielefeld in advance.

“I once said: I have achieved every goal that I have not set myself. We have achieved something in a club for eleven years that we never expected. And I know I played my part in that. It will connect me with the history of the club and I will also tell my children about it.”
