When Arja Ahtaanluoma In 2017, he woke up from the intensive care unit, cramped his calf.
– It came to the nurse and said I had been sleeping for five weeks. Unfortunately, both hands and legs have had to be amputated. There is no calf that could be cramped, Arja recalls in YLE’s novelty documentary Hand.
Arja had her husband at the time Mika with a common company. While cutting the snacks, Arja accidentally cut her index finger with a carpet knife. The wound was small and Arja thought it would need stitches.
A couple of days earlier, Arja had broken her rib while moving the lilac buckle. Doctors believe that a bacterium had entered the finger wound who had nested in a broken rib and caused blood poisoning. Blood switched to protecting the most important organs and the hands and feet went to the necrosis.

It took a long time to accept the new body.
– The idea came to mind that it would have been better not to wake up. That you could kill yourself. But when you can’t do it anymore, Arja tells about her dark thoughts.
Over the past few years, Arja’s life has been supported by hand and foot prostheses. Now it changes. Arja will be made in Finland’s first handwriting. The documentary on television today monitors Arja and the doctors to prepare for a historical measure.
While waiting for surgery, Arja writes a list of things that she expects to do after that. The list has been made, two-handed meals, makeup, hairpiece and charging a 3D printer. Husband Mika proposes the use of the battery drill as a continuation of the list.

Getting a transplant requires a suitable donor, a dead person from whom the hand can be transferred. As surgery approaches, contradictory thoughts are plagued by Arja.
– When I hear that an accident has happened somewhere, it always comes to my mind that this is a person like that. There will be a bad conscience when I think that someone dies and as a duck bird, because I get spare parts.

Eventually the call comes. Arja’s hand transfer surgery is displayed in the YLE documentary. When the last stitch is in place, doctors shake hands with each other with a smile on their face.
After waking up in the hospital, Arja stops nails. That’s what he has been waiting for for years.
