Arie Boomsma shares his golden tip for when you snore or sleep with your mouth open

Breathing through the nose has several advantages over breathing through the mouth.

nasal breathing

Breathing through your nose is considered healthier because of your nose hairs. “Your nose filters the air from everything that you would rather not get into your lungs,” the presenter and gym owner said on Instagram. For example, think of dirt, dust and bacteria. Sometimes you do not realize that you are breathing through your mouth, but luckily you can train yourself in nasal breathing in various ways. Arie shares a number of tips for this:

  • Breathe through your nose when doing breathing exercises
  • Breathe through your nose to the rhythm of your walking steps (4 steps in, 4 steps out)
  • Tape your mouth close to an activity (such as mowing the lawn, washing dishes, vacuuming)
  • Tape your mouth shut when you go to sleep

Health Benefits

Do you ever wake up with a bone-dry mouth and your tongue feels like a piece of leather? Chances are you slept with your mouth open. This can cause moisture loss and that can cause inflammation, redness and irritation from deeper skin layers. But those aren’t the only drawbacks of sleeping with an open mouth.

But sleeping with tape on your mouth…? “That last one sounds drastic,” admits Arie. “And yes. my wife also sometimes smiles lovingly at me when I come up with an experiment like this again, but that nose breathing is very rewarding.” You would wake up refreshed, have more energy and recover faster during and after training. It would also have a positive effect on your skin.

Tip from Arie Boomsma against snoring

“Honestly, it’s also just nice to get over the inconvenience of such an act and just give it a try,” Arie says. But he does give a tip: “Warn your partner or roommate if you don’t live alone.” Although they may be happy, since someone who breathes through their nose at night generally snores much less. Win win!
