The Argentine government denies accredited journalists access to the Casa Rosada government building. The decision was taken ‘as a precaution’ after a report of illegal espionage, State Secretary for Communications Javier Lanari said on X.

“The sole purpose is to ensure national security,” Lanari said in his message.

The restriction is special. According to the newspaper La Nacion the building remained accessible to journalists even during military dictatorships in the past.

The reason is said to have been, among other things, a criminal complaint by President Javier Milei’s security service against two journalists from the TN channel.

According to the authorities, video footage that was broadcast showed sensitive areas. Milei attacked the two journalists on X and labeled them ‘repulsive scum’.

The government also refers to investigations into potential foreign influence. This would include a Russian disinformation campaign.
