Papu Gomez, the 2022 soccer world champion, has been convicted of doping. The matter was reported by, among others, the Italian Gazzetta dello Sport and Spanish Relief.

Gomez, 35, has been banned for two years after testing positive for doping in November 2022 – just days before the start of the World Cup in Qatar.

The Argentinian suspects that the positive test result is due to the medicinal syrup he took before the World Cup tournament. The medicated syrup was meant for her children. Gomez did not ask the club’s doctors about the use of the substance in advance.

Last season, Gomez was still playing in the Spanish league in Sevilla, who were aware of the drug case for months. However, the two-year ban only clicked this week.

It was difficult for Sevilla to find a new club for Gomez in the summer, as other teams did not want to take the risk of possible doping. So Sevilla terminated the midfielder’s contract, which would have continued this season.

In the fall, Gomez moved to Monza of the Italian league, where he only played two matches.
