The demand for cultural activities in the district is increasing. “We are catching up for art and culture in Nieuw-West,” writes councilor Touria Meliani (Art and Culture) in a press release. “For the Nieuwe Meervaart we are looking for an architectural team that will design an inviting, safe and natural place.” It should be known next autumn who will be entrusted with the job.
The plans for the new building have met with a lot of resistance in recent years from local residents, who do not want construction to take place in a green area. And actually that is not allowed. However, the council has made an exception: the location in the Sloterplas would offer more opportunities to ‘make the design fit in with the rest of the environment’.
Not higher than 30 meters
However, the municipality writes that it takes the wishes of residents and entrepreneurs into account. About 1,000 of them shared their preferences in April, such as that the building should fit in with the green environment. They can also make their voices heard regarding the choice of an architectural team. They advise the selection committee, which then ultimately makes the decision.
The rough contours of the building are already clear. For example, the building may not be higher than 30 meters and a catering facility is also permitted in the building, as well as offices and a roof garden.
