On the recommendation of State Secretary Van Bruggen of Justice and Security, the Council of Ministers has approved the appointment of Prof. MJ (Maarten) Kroeze as President of the Supreme Court. The appointment will take effect on November 1, 2026. Kroeze will succeed Prof. G. (Dineke) de Groot as president.
Kroeze is currently vice president and justice in the civil chamber of the Supreme Court. He is also a professor of corporate law at Erasmus University Rotterdam and a judge in the Benelux Court of Appeal. He was previously dean of Erasmus School of Law and worked as a lawyer.
The Supreme Court is the highest court in civil, criminal and tax matters. As the highest court, the Supreme Court can rule on judicial decisions against which an appeal in cassation is open. The Supreme Court then assesses whether the law has been correctly applied and interpreted, whether the procedure has been followed correctly and whether a ruling is sufficiently and comprehensibly motivated.
