At the proposal of State Secretary Van Bruggen of Justice and Security, the Council of Ministers has approved the appointment of Mr Geert Potjewijd as chairman of the Dutch Data Protection Authority. The appointment for a period of 5 years will take effect on August 1, 2026.

Potjewijd currently works as a lawyer at De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek. He was previously chairman of the board there. Before his career as a lawyer, he was a lecturer and researcher at Leiden University. Potjewijd is the successor to Aleid Wolfsen as chairman of the Dutch Data Protection Authority.

The Dutch Data Protection Authority is the independent supervisor of the processing of personal data. It assesses whether individuals and organizations comply with the General Data Protection Regulation. Since 2023, the Dutch Data Protection Authority has also been the supervisor of algorithms and AI. She also tests new laws and regulations in the field of personal data and provides information about privacy and personal data.
