If you want to be successful as CEO of the most valuable technology company in the world, you need more than just business acumen. Tim Cook, Apple’s leader, revealed his literary influences in a remarkable interview – a surprisingly diverse collection of works that have shaped his leadership philosophy and worldview.
• Tim Cook names six formative books
• Selection ranges from classics to biographies
• Focus on topics such as leadership, values and responsibility
The Power of Literature in Apple’s Leadership
Great leaders are often great readers. While Warren Buffett devoured up to 1,000 pages a day in his early days as an investor and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos organized all-day book clubs for his executives, Tim Cook also follows this tradition. In a rare podcast appearance on “Dua Lipa: At Your Service” in November 2023, the Apple CEO shared his personal reading list with the world.
The selection of books reflects Cook’s personality: a mix of American classics, moving memoirs and inspiring biographies of civil rights fighters. These works show that the top manager looks far beyond Silicon Valley and draws his leadership philosophy from a wide variety of sources.
Classic with a timeless message
Harper Lee’s To Disturb the Nightingale is at the top of Cook’s recommendations. Published in 1960, the novel, which is one of the most important works of American literature, deals with themes such as racism, moral courage and social justice. “I think this book is not just for young students, but for all of us,” Cook emphasized to Dua Lipa. The Pulitzer Prize winner’s timeless messages of tolerance and standing up for the weak seem to shape Cook’s leadership style at Apple.
“Shoe Dog: The Official Biography of the Nike Founder” by Phil Knight is Cook’s second recommendation. The Nike co-founder’s memoirs, published in 2016, particularly fascinate the Apple boss because of their complexity. “It’s actually a business book, but it’s also a book about life,” Cook explained. “It’s really great.” Knight’s honest account of the ups and downs of building a global corporation will serve as inspiration for Cook’s own entrepreneurial challenges.
Humanity and universal values
Particularly moving is Cook’s choice of “Before I Go” by Paul Kalanithi. Cook described neurosurgeon Paul Kalanithi’s memoirs, published posthumously in 2016, as “phenomenal”. The book reflects Kalanithi’s battle with terminal lung cancer and his profound thoughts on mortality, illness and the meaning of life. The fact that Cook highlights this deeply human and vulnerable work shows a side of the Apple CEO beyond the business world.
“I am Malala” by Malala Yousafzai and Christina Lamb rounds out Cook’s personal selection. The autobiography of the youngest Nobel Prize winner in history, published in 2013, touched the Apple boss in a special way. “I love Malala’s story and her passion for educating young girls inside and outside of this book,” Cook said. “We work with her and the work she does is incredible.” This connection is more than just admiration: Apple and the Malala Fund announced a long-term partnership in 2018 to provide primary school education to around 100,000 underprivileged girls.
Inspiration from civil rights heroes
Cook’s recommendations conclude with biographies of Martin Luther King Jr. and Bobby Kennedy. “I love reading biographies of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy and some of the great people who advanced civil rights,” Cook told Dua Lipa. Although he did not name specific titles, there are well-known Kennedy biographies by Thurston Clarke and Chris Matthews, as well as a comprehensive autobiography of King compiled by historian Clayborne Carson.
Tim Cook’s book selection reveals a leadership style that goes far beyond pure business figures. The six recommendations show a manager who is guided by human stories, social challenges and timeless values. Since taking the helm at Apple in 2011, Cook has led the company to continued success based not only on operational excellence, but also on a leadership philosophy steeped in literature.
