Apple is reportedly planning a foldable iPad that won’t be released until 2028 at the earliest. With a display size of up to 20 inches and a combination of iPad and Mac features, this device could usher in a new era.

A design for the future
According to Mark Gurman’s Bloomberg Power On newsletter, Apple is working on a foldable iPad that could have a screen size of up to 20 inches. This corresponds to the area of two iPad Pros next to each other. A central goal in development is a display without a visible bend – a common problem with previous foldable devices from other manufacturers. The first prototypes already have an almost invisible transition between the display halves.
Technology and software
The device is intended to use a further development of iPadOS so that macOS apps could be run by 2028. This hybrid orientation enables both creative work and lighter computing tasks. Apple Pencil support is also expected to optimize use for designers and creative professionals.
However, the Mac remains the first choice for more demanding applications. According to Bloomberg, Apple doesn’t want to merge iPads and Macs, but instead wants to keep the product lines separate to serve different user needs.
Comparison with other manufacturers
With this device, Apple is competing with companies like Microsoft and Lenovo, who have already tested similar concepts. Although Microsoft produced the Courier prototype and later announced the Surface Neo, none of the devices made it to market. Lenovo has introduced the Yoga Book 9i, a dual-screen tablet with two 13.3-inch OLED displays, but it doesn’t offer the same elegance of a unified foldable display.
According to the rumors, Apple could also get involved in the concept of foldable smartphones and, according to Mark Gurman, release an iPhone that can compete with Samsung’s competing product “Galaxy Flip” by 2026 at the earliest.
Technological challenges
The development of foldable displays remains one of the biggest hurdles. According to MacRumors, Apple is working closely with LG Display to develop screens with ultra-thin cover glass that are durable and won’t show visible creases even after years of use. An X post by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also shows that Apple has been testing “Electronic Paper Displays” (EPD) for several years, which could be used in foldable devices in the future.
