Apple is expanding its iPhone offer with a thinner model. The iPhone giant presented this on its keynote.
Apple has introduced its thinning iPhone so far. The iPhone Air is 5.6 millimeters thick and looks much slimmer than previous models. For this, the group went to its technical limits: thanks to the in-house chips, practically all electronics was shrunk so that it fits into the camera curve. The remaining housing is filled out by the battery.
According to analysts, the design also shows that Apple is already far on the way to a foldable smartphone. The group has previously left this market rivals such as Samsung and Google.
Titan frame for stability
The iPhone Air got a large screen with a diagonal of 6.5 centimeters and a frame made of titanium. The selection of material should ensure maximum strength. A good decade ago, Apple was exposed to the so -called “Bendgate” that the larger one iPhone 6 could bend too easily. This should not be repeated this time.
A camera lens and ESIM
The slimmer design required a technical balancing act and compromises. So there is only one camera lens – for more in the curvature on the back of the iPhone Air there was simply no space. Thanks to software and the lens design, telephoto images in the quality of a camera with 12 megapixels should also be possible. No space remained for a slot for the SIM card. The connection to the mobile network runs exclusively via the built -in reprogrammable ESIM.
Battery “For the whole day”
At first it remained unclear how exactly the slimmer design affects the battery life. Apple promises enough battery performance “for the whole day” – but initially did not name a term in hours. Artificial intelligence should help with energy management. For this, the new operating system analyzes iOS 26 The typical battery consumption of the users and calculates when the battery could be empty in order to save electricity in good time. Nevertheless, the group designed a new – also thin – external battery, which is held by magnets on the back of the device.
Breeding of foldable iPhone?
For industry analyst Francisco Jeronimo from the market researcher IDC, the Air shows how far Apple is already in developing a foldable iPhone. He even assumes that the technical advances made made the thinner air possible. “They are on the right path because the air is one of the thinnest available smartphones, if not the thinnest.” According to media reports, Apple could present an iPhone that can be applied to the size of a small tablet in the coming year. This year Samsung set the scale in the market with an extremely thin generation of its model series Galaxy Fold.
In Apple’s model range, the Air replaces the iPhone Plus – the larger version of the standard model. The plus was not particularly popular, said Jeronimo. Consumers who wanted to save some money would have preferred to buy the iPhone Pro’s previous year. With the Air, Apple offers you an “interesting device”. Both Jeronimo and industry analyst AVI Greenengart do not see compromises in camera and battery performance. “It should be okay on most days,” said Greengart.
Orange thanks to aluminum
In addition to the Air, Apple also presented the iPhone 17 as usual as a standard model and as a more expensive pro version with more functions. They got the usual upgrades with better chips and cameras. In the Pro model, Apple switched from a titanium frame to an aluminum housing, which-as with the MacBook notebooks-was milled out of a block.
According to the group, an advantage is that aluminum derives heat 20 times better than Titan. And AI functions, for example, require a lot of computing power in the camera company and can heat the device quite a bit. Apple also got more scope with aluminum in color design. The iPhone 17 Pro is now also available in a bright color: orange.
The next iPhone Pro has been getting a noteworthy look for the first time since 2020: the camera island on the back now runs across the entire width of the device.
Under the hood, the 17 series and the iPhone Air were better secured than previous models against spy attacks. Apple speaks with the increased protection of the “most important upgrade in storage security in the history of operating systems for consumers”. Apple had already retained new services and functions in Europe in the past, referring to ambiguity from European digital laws. The Airpods Pro 3 should also offer better sound quality and twice as good oppression of ambient noise.
AI in the background
The iPhone has been by far the most important product from Apple for years. Rivals such as Samsung and Google have recently focused on marketing their competitive models with many functions based on artificial intelligence as personal everyday assistants. Apple also announced large AI jumps with a more helpful version of his assistance software Siri in the previous iPhone generation. Then the group had to postpone the new Siri to the coming year.
Now the AI is more embedded in individual functions. Users will often fall back on without perceiving that artificial intelligence is behind it. Analysts like William Kerwin from the Finanz company Morningstar see no big problem for Apple. Think about artificial intelligence as a software – but it is ultimately used on devices, Kerwin pointed out in the US broadcaster CNBC. And Apple is the leading device provider with the iPhone as well as Mac computers and iPads. “For me, that means that you still have time to get the strategy.”
