Apple has announced the cessation of production of the iPod Touch music player. The cessation of production knows the decision for Apple’s iPod era, as the Touch is the latest model in the company’s product line.

When the first iPod was launched in 2001, it was able to store 1,000 songs, an astounding amount of music on one device at the time of its release.

Today, Apple’s streaming service Apple Music contains more than 90 million songs.

The iPod Touch was designed by the same team that later developed the first iPhone. The popularity of the smartphone quickly overshadowed the music player.

Over the years, Apple has introduced several different iPod models, including the Nano and Shuffle, which were discontinued in 2017, but the Touch, launched in 2007, is the last remaining model to be discontinued. According to Apple, the devices will be on sale as long as there are enough of them in stock.

Apple’s late director Steve Jobs introduced the first iPod in an eye-catching way in 2001. Rumors circulated that the company was releasing a new music player after a hint “It’s not a Mac” was given in the invitation to the release event.

The slogan of the presentation event was concise: “1,000 pieces in your pocket”.

– Music is a part of everyone’s life. There has always been music. It will always exist, Jobs said in his hour-long presentation.

The end is history. The iPod product line has enjoyed great popularity over the years. BMW was the first to introduce a new entertainment system in its cars with a built-in iPod system. Within a few years, most automakers followed BMW’s example.

In the end, however, it was inevitable that the iPhone would one day replace the iPod.

– When Apple created the iPhone, it knew it would ultimately mean the beginning of the end for the iPod, CCS Insight chief analyst Ben Wood says To the BBC.

The iPod was not the first MP3 player on the market, but in terms of design and features it overshadowed competitors’ devices. It paved the way for the digital music revolution and enticed people to give up CD and cassette players.

Jobs unveiled the iPod on the Apple stage on October 23, 2001 in his familiar look: a black polo shirt and jeans.

– Listening to music is never the same again on the iPod, Jobs said quite aptly.
