Sting is set to perform in front of inmates at a Naples prison. According to announcements in the Italian newspaper “La Repubblica”, he uses a guitar built by prisoners – from the wood of migrant boats. Secondigliano prison is known for housing mafia bosses.
“Metamorfosi”: A prison rehabilitation program
As the British newspaper “The Times” reports, inmates of the prison in Italy are regularly selected as part of the “Metamorfosi” program to be taught woodworking skills. According to “Vaticannews”, the Italian Ministry of the Interior has made ten refugee boats from Lampedusa available for (instrument) production, with which refugees and migrants have translated to Italy in recent months. The barges were transported to the prisons, where inmates built them into instruments in the prison’s own violin making and carpentry workshops.
This program has been introduced in several Italian prisons. It should be of particular importance, since the creations of the prisoners are intended to serve the rehabilitation of the prisoners on the one hand and to clarify the plight of the migrants on the other hand, who dare and dared to cross the Mediterranean Sea.
