The majority of Dutch people incorrectly replace the word ‘hen’ (personal pronoun) with the word ‘hun’ (possessive pronoun), such as in the sentence: That book belongs to ‘hun’ instead of ‘hen’ (persons). ‘Their’ is used correctly in the sentence: It is ‘their’ (possession) book. So the HAVO Dutch final exam in 2026 will not focus on this correct use of language, but on how Dutch people deal with gender language such as ‘he’, ‘she’ and ‘them’. Reader Chris Wiets writes this.
