New national player Anton Stach from 1.FSV Mainz 05 apparently never saw a real chance of a professional career at his former club VfL Wolfsburg. “We had a good team at Wolfsburg II back then, I felt good there and played well too. Unfortunately, the connection to the professionals came up short. I honestly don’t know if I was even on the radar,” the 23-year-old said in one Interview of the “Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung”.
Stach played from 2018 to 2020 in what was then the regional league team, the “Wolves”, where he contributed six goals and six assists in 40 games, and then moved to Mainz via SpVgg Greuther Fürth. In March, the defensive midfielder, whose market value rose to €8m at the end of March as a result of his development, made his debut for Germany in a 2-0 win against Israel. On Friday evening (8.30 p.m. / DAZN) he returns to Wolfsburg for the first time with Mainz in the Bundesliga.
“I think I was allowed to train upstairs at least once,” said Stach about his time at VfL. “Nevertheless, the two years in Wolfsburg were very important for my career. And that things would go on so well afterwards, very few could have expected that.” Bruno Labbadia and Oliver Glasner were professional coaches during this period in which VfL was playing for Europe. Stach played in the reserves under Rüdiger Ziehl.

Stach said in mid-March about his nomination for the DFB team: “Everything fell out of my face. (…) I couldn’t sleep really well after the news.” National coach Hansi Flick also described Stach as a “surprise for everyone” and explained: “We want to see what potential he offers us.”
