Anthony Dumarey stops as mayor of Oudenburg

Dumarey has been mayor of Oudenburg since 2018, but on October 2 he is forced to say goodbye to the mayor’s sash. Dumarey’s position had been under discussion for some time because he was allegedly guilty of a conflict of interest. The mayor’s real estate office may have been involved in the construction of a new Welfare House. with luxury apartments above.

Tightened supervision

The project developer entered into a contract with one of the brokers from the Dumarey real estate office to sell those apartments. However, no permits for the project had yet been issued. A local resident filed a complaint and the mayor’s real estate office withdrew. A study by Audit Flanders shows that this can still be regarded as bias. Oudenburg therefore came under increased supervision.

Clear signal

Dumarey had to provide an explanation during a closed city council meeting last night, but he was unable to regain the trust of his coalition partners N-VA and Vooruit. They insisted on a clear signal from the mayor. Today, Dumarey reports in an open letter on Facebook that he is stepping aside as mayor.

In all likelihood, fourth councilor Romina Vanhooren will become the new mayor of Oudenburg.
