The central government has launched an entire website about it: op Ikvermoedhuiselijkkracht.nl you can learn what the signs of domestic violence are and it is emphasized that it is important to do something as an outsider. But if there is evidence of 125,000 words, broadcasters such as BNNVARA and VPRO do not know how quickly to look away.

Not a private matter

Angela Degener, the former mistress of Theo Maassen who is considered one of the whistleblowers regarding his alleged domestic violence, cannot keep up. Although she canceled her plan for a daily podcast on the case last week, she has now given a major TV interview to Show news.

Why does she stay so on top of it? “Domestic violence is not a private matter, but it is simply a crime where you have to be open and speak out. Joyce has spoken openly to me, but the reason why she is now in denial is precisely the reason that she has stayed with him for years despite the violence, so yes… I have the feeling that she is somewhat stuck there.”

Few hundred meters

An image has emerged as if Angela only called the Privé about this matter, but that is not correct. “I also called the police, including Crime Anonymous, because it was bothering me. I thought: a few hundred meters away there is a woman who has been abused for years, what should I do?”

Angela points out that Theo’s wife Joyce has indicated that she cannot rule out the possibility of harming herself. “That’s just on WhatsApp, right? I was quite shocked by that. That’s what I wrote too: ‘I’m very scared that you could do something to yourself.’ Only then did I understand the seriousness of the whole thing.”

New victim

Now that Angela has identified herself, a new victim of Theo has come forward, she says. “I started talking to someone who had also dealt with him. Then I thought: oh, then my podcast made some sense after all. My goal that people would stand up has been achieved.”

She continues: “I am talking to this person. Of course it is all very sensitive. She actually confirmed the other two’s story that some events happened in his other house. I hope, and I should not encourage her to report it, that she wants to tell her story anonymously, if necessary to Crime Anonymous.”

Two others

By “two others,” Angela refers to two other alleged victims she heard about through the grapevine. There would also have been violence there.

Private boss Evert Santegoeds thinks that Theo really struck the wrong person with Angela. “I think I appreciate that about her. She just keeps going. She really thinks she has a point and that something should be done about it.”

Meanwhile, Theo remains silent. “I find that extremely suspicious for someone with Theo’s verbal qualities.”
