A ship sent to rescue the humpback whale Timmy is on its way to where the whale is still stranded off Germany’s Baltic Sea coast. The rescuers want to hoist the humpback whale on board with the water around it and take it to the North Sea.
On the ship, Timmy is housed in a steel basin. He is taken to deep waters more than 400 kilometers away.
The humpback whale beached at the end of March off the coast of the German Baltic Sea, near the northern island of Poel (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern). Several rescue attempts have been made, but so far without success.
On Monday it seemed that the animal was able to swim away independently due to high tide, but it ended up on a sandbank again. The water level also dropped sharply, causing Timmy to be largely above the water level.
In Germany there is great sympathy for the humpback whale. German media closely follow all developments and broadcast live images of Timmy.
