The sports retail association Intersport Deutschland eG had to accept a slight decline in sales in the 2020/21 financial year, which ended at the end of September. At 2.65 billion euros, revenues were one percent below the previous year’s level, the company announced on Thursday. The “strongly growing” online business was able to “largely” compensate for the effects of the months-long lockdown on stationary trade.

The development in the individual product categories was also shaped by the protective measures against the Covid-19 pandemic. Revenues in the bike and outdoor areas rose, while demand in the training, team sports and winter sports segments was impacted by the temporary restrictions.

The association is now optimistic about the future: “Intersport is coming out of the pandemic with a tailwind and is on a growth course – with growth in terms of area and new memberships in the association,” says a statement. In doing so, the company relies in particular on the “consistent implementation of the omnichannel strategy and the digitization of the entire supply chain”, a “repositioning” of the Intersport brand and a stronger focus on sustainability.

Alexander von Preen, the CEO of Intersport Germany, specified the goals for the coming years: “We are optimistic that we will achieve annual growth of over 5 percent by 2025 and that we will achieve double-digit growth online,” he said in a statement.
