Former chairman of the center and current member of parliament Annika Saarikko tells Turku Sanomat In the Mamacular podcast from her miscarriage about ten years ago.

Saarikon’s and lawyer’s spouse Erkki Papunen firstborn son Aarni was born in the fall of 2014. Shortly after this, the couple’s wish came true and Saarikko was pregnant again before her son’s first birthday.

The pregnancy ended in miscarriage in the first trimester. Saarikko started bleeding and he called the hospital. The hospital was advised to stay and monitor the situation. Saarikko stayed home for the night and in the morning the leak continued.

Instead of the hospital, Saarikko went to work. A demonstration was organized at Helsinki’s Rautatintor against the laws related to the government’s work life reforms. Saarikon had to go to represent his party, because no one else could.

After the demonstration, Saarikko went to the hospital, where it was confirmed that the pregnancy had been terminated. After the necessary procedures, Saarikko stayed in the hospital overnight. In the evening, Saarikko heard an impromptu question from the nurse.

– The guy hit the spot, who asked me, who had just suffered a miscarriage, in the hospital bed, if I could somehow clarify why asylum seekers have started coming to Finland so much more.

Saarikko says that he will never forget the nurse’s question.

– After that, I’ve thought that you can give a lot to work, but you have to cross the line somewhere. It wasn’t good for your health, but it was also mentally tough.

Later, Saariko and Papunen’s family grew with two more sons. Charles was born in 2019, Lauri in 2024.
