ANIMAL WELFARE LAW | Leaving a dog tied up in front of a supermarket can cost you up to 10,000 euros

The data is chilling: a pet is abandoned every two minutes in Spain, according to reports from the protective entities. And the vast majority of them, except in communities such as Catalonia and Madrid – where it has been expressly prohibited – are slaughtered.

For reasons like this, the Government approved the so-called Animal Welfare Law last March. However, this will not enter into force until September 29. And that provided that the new government emerged from the elections on July 23.

One of the curious novelties that this law is the one of article 27, which ensures that it will be penalized to leave the dog tied up without supervision. Which means that you can’t just leave it tied to lampposts, fences or bins while shopping, for example.

The article in question, in its section d)says that it is expressly prohibited “to keep them tied up or wandering through public spaces without face-to-face supervision by the person responsible for their care and behavior.”

Failure to comply with this section is considered minor offenseand is punishable by “a warning or a fine of five hundred to ten thousand euros”.
