Angelique Kerber will take part in the Australian Open without any match practice.

Because of a corona infection during preparation, Germany’s best tennis player will not travel to Melbourne until this Friday, where the first Grand Slam tournament of the season will begin on January 17th.

The former number one in the world canceled her planned participation in the WTA tournament in Sydney next week.

“I’m disappointed that I’ll miss the WTA event in Sydney, but after testing positive for Covid-19 last month, I had to adjust my plan because of the quarantine period,” wrote the 33-year-old on Instagram.

Corona Kerber had already made it difficult to start the new year last year. Because there was a positive corona case on her plane to Australia, Kerber had to go into quarantine in Melbourne for two weeks. At the Australian Open, she was eliminated in the first round.

“I’ve done my medical check-up and I hope I’ll be ready for the Australian Open,” wrote Kerber.

The world number 16 travels to Australia without a coach after breaking up with her coach Torben Beltz after last season. Beltz is now training the British US Open winner Emma Raducanu.
