Angelique Kerber ended her career in the summer of 2024. Two years later, she is now playing a farewell game – against, of all people, a friend.

The former world number one Angelique Kerber will play an official farewell match almost two years after her last tennis match as a professional. The 38-year-old will meet her good friend Ana Ivanović in Bad Homburg on June 20th. “I’m really looking forward to Ana, because somehow this match closes a circle,” Kerber told the “Bild” newspaper.

The two have known each other “for a really long time, she is one of my best friends and we have spent a lot of time together on and off the court,” said the three-time Grand Slam winner. A few days ago, Kerber and Ivanović were in Paris together, as they showed on Instagram.

The game takes place as part of the WTA grass tournament, which will be held in Bad Homburg from June 20th to 27th. Kerber is the tournament director there. “It’s the perfect stage for a special day with lots of emotions.”

Kerber was the best German tennis player of this millennium and was number one in the world for a total of 34 weeks in 2016 and 2017. She played her last game as a professional at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. In the quarterfinals, Kerber lost to eventual gold medalist Zheng Qinwen and then ended her career. Ana Ivanović was also once at the top of the world rankings and won the French Open.
