Over a 24-hour period, the maximum is set at 110 attempts, and over the span of five years, users can make as many as 1,800 attempts.
However, Rahman points out that while this system is somewhat effective for randomly chosen PINs, the reality is that most users select easily guessable codes, often related to personal information, like birthdays. As a result, attackers can exploit these predictable patterns to gain unauthorized access.
Stricter Limits: What to Expect
The forthcoming Android version will tighten these limits significantly. In the first minute, users will only have six attempts. This decreases to seven attempts in six minutes and a mere eight attempts over 25 minutes. Harder still, users will only be allowed 12 incorrect attempts within 24 hours and a mere 19 attempts over the course of five years.
Failing to input the correct PIN multiple times will temporarily lock the device, adding another layer of security. Google’s new implementation will also display clearer timeout durations, such as indicating a 30-minute wait rather than a confusing 1,800 seconds.
Understanding Incorrect PIN Entries
For users who frequently struggle to remember their PINs, there’s an exciting new feature. Android 17 will learn which codes have been incorrectly entered. If a user attempts to input a previously used incorrect PIN, this will not count against the total number of allowed attempts, helping to alleviate frustration for those who may frequently mistype their codes. In addition, users will receive notifications when they input the same incorrect PIN multiple times, providing an extra nudge to recall their correct code.
