Andries Jonker not shocked by Orange Lionesses: ‘If you don’t make them, you’ll be screwed’ | Dutch football

“I’m not shocked by that,” Jonker responded to NOS. “I know that in advance. Either we make the chances and then you can easily win or you don’t make them and then you get the cold shoulder.”

The national coach called the loss particularly annoying for goalkeeper Jacintha Weimar. She made her debut, but made a mistake with the second goal. “You get two balls on target and two go in. That is very annoying. I’ll have to see if she could do anything about it. With the first, the ball fell behind her extremely unfortunately. From the side it looked like she couldn’t do anything about it.”

Sherida Spitse’s response

Captain Sherida Spitse thought that the Orange Lionesses had more chances than Belgium to win the first Nations League match. “They score from a corner and a throw-in, but you see: football is a strange game. We were quite satisfied with the game, but we know that we have to do a lot better against England on Tuesday. England is also a football team and Belgium, with all due respect, is not. They relax and wait for our mistakes. England will play football and so it will be a completely different match.”

According to Spitse, there was no question of underestimation after the 5-0 win over Belgium in July during the final match for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. “They didn’t feel like it at all at the time, and that reflected from all sides. Now it’s about something and it’s a completely different game. This was beyond comparison.”

Due to the loss, the Netherlands has to chase England, Sarina Wiegman’s team, who won against Scotland (2-1). The World Cup finalist is the opponent on Tuesday in the Galgenwaard in Utrecht.
