Swedish NHL star Elias Pettersson fell victim to a scam.
According to Sundsvall Tidning Pettersson, who represents the Vancouver Canucks, wanted to buy a luxury villa in the municipality of Danderyd in Sweden. The purchase price of the property was SEK 26 million, or about EUR 2.3 million.
Pettersson paid the broker a generous down payment of 235,300 euros. It was later revealed that the broker was indeed a fraud.
– The money is gone, Pettersson’s father Torbjörn told the newspaper.
Quoting Sundsvall Tidning Göteborgs-Posten saysthat the NHL forward noticed several flaws in the house after paying the down payment, which the broker didn’t tell him about. Pettersson demanded the cancellation of the deal and the return of the down payment.
The seller did not agree to this, but demanded almost 436,000 euros from Pettersson for withdrawing from the deal.
The dispute went all the way to court. The court found that Pettersson had the right to cancel the deal, but the NHL star did not get the down payment back.
The down payment ended up in the bank account of the fraudulent Real Estate Agent. The broker was sentenced to six years in prison for several gross frauds. It was found that the broker also cheated others in real estate transactions in the same way.
Pettersson, representing the Canucks, has scored 11+19 in 40 games this season. He earns 11.6 million dollars for the season in Vancouver.
Pettersson, reserved for the NHL at number five, was chosen as the best rookie of the 2018–2019 season. The attacker will represent Sweden in the 4 Nations tournament starting in February.
